Quick Fixes – Clothes Dryer

Problem: Dryer is making excessive noise

Check the dryer for shoes, belts, or other such items; remove.

Problem: Clothes are turning, but not drying.

  • Clean the lint filter after every load.
  • Check the vent on the side of the house for blockage; remove any items causing a problem. Make sure the flapper opens and moves freely.
  • Remove some of the clothes. Avoid drying too large of a load at once.
  • Check door gasket and replace if it’s leaking.
  • Check the heating element, timer, and thermostat. Replace broken parts as necessary.

Problem: Dryer won’t run.

  • Make sure the door is properly closed. Replace door switch or centrifugal switch if damaged.
  • Check to see if the power is out. Inspect the circuit breakers, fuses, and plugs. Reset the circuit breakers if necessary.
  • Check the switch and timer; replace if necessary.

Problem: The motor is running, but the drum won’t turn.

  • Tighten or replace the belt if it’s loose or broken.
  • Check the drum to see if it’s stuck; remove obstructions.
  • Check the idler wheel and replace if broken.
  • Check the drum support mechanism; replace if necessary.

Problem: The unit won’t stop running.

Check the timer. Replace if broken.

Problem: Laundry takes too long to dry.

  • Clean the lint trap and exhaust vent.
  • Remove some of the clothes. Avoid drying too large of a load at once.
