Plumbing System Routine Maintenance

  • Repair minor drips and leaks as they occur.
  • Avoid flushing any paper products or other items but toilet paper down the toilet.
  • Using a plunger should solve most clogging problems. Keep one in each bathroom in the home.
  • Visually inspect all pipes you can see for corrosion or leaks.
  • If your area has bitterly cold weather, allow a faucet to maintain a slow drip to help avoid frozen pipes.
  • Inspect the water heater for signs of leaks or corrosion.
  • Check the button of the water heater, the drain pan, and the floor for rust or water staining.
  • Every year, drain and flush your water heater. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater.
  • Soak the water heating element of your electric water heater in vinegar to remove corrosion and/or sediment build-up.
  • Water filters should be changed according to the manufacture’s recommendations.
