Summertime is all about being outside, enjoying good friends, family and great food. Chances are, you’ll be spending most of that time on your deck. Repairing your outdoor entertaining spaces can be an expensive ordeal, and regular maintenance is essential to its longevity. Here are a few tips on how to keep your deck looking its best all summer long:
- Inspect and repair small problems early. House Logic says it’s important to pay attention to areas within 6 inches of the ground, or close to sources of water. If you find any spots with rotting wood, repairing it right away can stave off replacing entire posts.
- Stain and seal. Most decks need to be stained and sealed on a regular basis. HGTV recommends a clear wood preservative that contains a UV protector, even if you have pressure treated lumber that resists insects and decay. You can also find stain options in either oil or latex, and provide fade and mildew resistance. Sealing your deck on a regular basis will help protect it from the elements for a longer amount of time, making it last even longer.
- Keep surrounding areas clean. By trimming nearby bushes and trees, you can eliminate many areas that contribute to rotting wood. This includes keeping foliage at least 12 inches away from the deck, and not letting leaves and debris pile up near the deck’s corners. You can also periodically move planters, chairs and tables so it gets worn evenly.
With any home project, always remember to wear protective eyewear and gloves where necessary. By performing regular maintenance to your backyard, you’ll be sure to enjoy your deck and summers for years to come. For more maintenance tips throughout your home, visit our HSA Resource Center.
